There are many people living in New York City that hope to one day become United States citizens. Now that dream may be easier to achieve.

Recently, a new immigration facility opened in Queens. The building is located on Jackson Avenue, and will provide people with customer service, fingerprinting, interviews, green cards and naturalization oath ceremonies. Officials hope the new facility will make the naturalization process more efficient.

The facility covers more than 48,000 square feet, and is worth $3.4 million. In addition to the direct services it provides to immigrants, it also serves as a reminder to people that there are places to go for help.

The new facility also appears to be in just the right location. Queens County remains the most diverse county in the nation.

"We are catching up to 21st-century demographics by moving our office where our customers are," one immigration official said.

The new facility will be open every day of the week, except for national holidays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

There are certain requirements that people must meet before beginning the naturalization process. For instance, individuals must be legal permanent residents and at least 18 years old. In addition, individuals must have had a green card for at least five years. They must also be able to read, write and speak English and be of good moral character.

To determine eligibility, a person would likely benefit from talking with an attorney who has experience in immigration law. An attorney can advise an individual on what steps to take to become a U.S. citizen, and in some cases, speed up the process.
